Essex Co. VA was created in 1692 from Old Rappahannock. The town of Tappahannock serves as the county seat. An article in the July 1954 issue of The William & Mary Quarterly lists Robert Beverly, Muscoe Garnett and Robert P. Waring(all Essex Co. residents) among the weathiest planters in Virginia. This article written by Professor Jackson T. Main is based on tax returns for the year 1782 and several years thereafter. For a time the Mattaponi Indians settled in the Piscataway Swamp area but moved west to Mattaponi River in 1668. It is also important to note that when Old Rappahannock Co. was dissolved its records were transfered to Essex Co. This is mind if you have research in Old Rappahannock you would need to check Essex Co. for any records available.
